The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) finished the fiscal year with more than twice as much spending on eggs and egg products as in 2019 and more than four times the volume of shell eggs.
AMS spent over $72.2 million to buy eggs and egg products -- $24.2 million on shell eggs and $48.1 million on egg products. The purchases included 24.6 million dozen shell eggs and 55.2 million pounds of liquid, frozen and dried egg products.
In addition to normal purchases, AMS made purchases under Section 32, Trade Mitigation and COVID Relief programs.
In fiscal year 2019, purchases were $34.9 million and comprised 5.7 million dozen shell eggs and 27.1 million pounds of egg products. FY 2018 spending was $24.9 million and $46.8 million in FY 2017.
