IPWA seeking comments on key welfare indicators

October 5, 2022

The International Poultry Welfare Alliance (IPWA) Key Welfare Indicators (KWI) Reference Guide is open for public comment until October 14. Click here to view the guide and submit comments.

UEP’s VP of Animal Welfare, Dr. Larry Sadler, and several UEP producers, along with other IPWA members including veterinarians, technical advisors, growers, breeders, and other industry stakeholders, compiled these reference guides for broilers, turkeys, and layers to measure outcomes-based key welfare indicators.

The guide is a comprehensive, independent resource created to educate on how, why, and when to measure KWIs and use the data to improve welfare. This work will lead to better welfare outcomes for the birds, help to increase trust and transparency, and offer a method to collect data to help defend against misinformation.

IPWA plans to release the final copies of the guide after reviewing and considering public comments. A portion of the program at the 2022 Poultry Sustainability & Welfare Summit will provide more information about the guide and provide the opportunity for input on the types of training and materials which will help companies implement key welfare indicators.
