Northwestern Study on Eggs Contradicts Prevailing Research

March 21, 2019

Researchers at Northwestern University published a study linking eggs to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in the Journal of the American Medical Association last week.  The research results were quickly picked up in the mainstream press and published in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and other national media outlets.

The Egg Nutrition Center quickly issued a statement about the inconsistency of this study with that of other recent studies that found eggs do not negatively impact disease risk factors and the need for additional research.

NPR Food, one of the media outlets providing balanced coverage on the issue, conducted a poll on Twitter asking the question “Does this EGG & CHOLESTEROL study give you pause?”  Seventy-five percent of the respondents responded, “No, I will keep eating eggs.”
