This year, Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) focused on the progress made by several companies in meeting their cage-free commitments when releasing its 2020 Egg Track report. As stated in the CIWF press release, “Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, some of the biggest names in food – including Subway, Target, General Mills, and more – not only moved closer to their 100% cage-free goal but continued to transparently report their progress.” This announcement was covered in Bloomberg and other media.
In general, the report does not provide any insights not already known to the egg industry. Egg Track has expanded globally, adding companies not based in the United States. The report also claims Burger King (Restaurant Brands International) withdrew its European cage-free commitment and calls out a few other companies that are not reporting on progress. Of note, they have added a “Producers” section. Currently, no data is available, but this section implies they plan to expand tracking beyond retailers, manufactures, and restaurants.
