DxE exploits COVID-19

April 9, 2020

Even during this national emergency, Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) is planning on trespassing on farms as part of its “Cancel Animal Ag” campaign. The campaign consists of two components. The first and most alarming tactic is a publicly announced effort encouraging activists to trespass on farms and shoot video. A DxE campaign video shows an activist on a laying hen farm with a Cancel Animal Ag banner, stealing a laying hen.

The second part of the campaign is an effort to incorrectly connect COVID-19 to animal agriculture. Attempts to push this false narrative are being carried out by other extremist groups such as the Animal Save Movement, which states, “killing animals = coronavirus.” Karner Blue Capital, where former HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle serves as executive vice-president, released a press statement, “calling attention to the link between infectious diseases like COVID-19 and the mistreatment of animals.”

Not all animal activist groups are taking such an irresponsible approach. Groups like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have announced efforts to help pets. Even extreme groups like Animal Outlook (formerly Compassion Over Killing) have announced the cancellation of planned events and restrictions on travel that match government recommendations. However, DxE’s actions remind farmers to always be on guard against those working against animal agriculture. It is essential farms stay vigilant and informed on animal activist activities during this time. See also UEP’s publication Protect Your Farm Against Animal Activists.
