In October, the Global Coalition for Animal Welfare (GCAW) was launched. Self-described as the “world’s first food industry-led initiative aimed at advancing animal welfare globally,” founding members are seven major food companies. Aramark, Compass Group, Elior Group, IKEA, Nestle, Sodexo, and Unilever, have combined revenues of $165 billion and 3.7 billion customers. The website for the new coalition prominently displays insight into the coalition stating, “Over 70% of the world’s 70 billion farm animals live in intensive systems, often in conditions where they are unable to move freely or behave naturally.”
