With a unanimous vote, the Arizona senate approved HB 2464 extending the date from 24 days to 45 days that Grade A eggs can remain available for sale after candled. Grade AA eggs will continue to carry a sell by date not more than 24 days after candled.
According to the sponsor, Representative Jill Norgaard, the bill will reduce food waste and drive down costs. According to Michelle Ahlmer, Executive Director of the Arizona Retailers Association, about $3 million worth of eggs are thrown out each year.
The bill will return to the House for a final vote and then go to Governor Doug Ducey for approval to become law.
