HPAI detections continue into June due to dairy infections

June 19, 2025

So far in 2025, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has affected 53 commercial layer and pullet farms, with more than 39.3 million birds impacted. Since February 2022, the total has reached 139 commercial layer and/or pullet sites and 138.31 million birds. Layer and pullet detections slowed in recent months, with four cases reported in March and two in April. However, as detections on dairy farms continue with positive cases, the virus infected three farms in May and one in June in Arizona.

In the western United States, dairy herd detections are ongoing, with eight new cases reported in the past 30 days across two states: California, with one, and Idaho, with seven. Arizona detections continue to ebb and flow, with no detections in the past 30 days, but tests show they continue to shift from positive/negative/positive. The total number of dairy farms affected since the virus was first identified in early 2024 is 1,073. Producers nationwide are reminded of the biosecurity risks posed by neighboring dairies, the risk of feeding multi-species out of your feed mills located on your farms, and the animal movements that contributed to the virus’s spread to poultry in late spring through fall 2024, which affected more than 30 million layers and pullets.

UEP continues to collaborate with USDA and other stakeholders on the U.S. Layer Vaccination Plan and other industry concerns. It is expected that a comprehensive Vaccination Plan for the poultry industry, informed by the AEB and UEP vaccine task force recommendations, will be given to the Secretary of Agriculture by APHIS sometime in late July. UEP encourages all members to take advantage of the important assessment opportunities available through APHIS. To request a Biosecurity or Wildlife Assessment, please contact USDA APHIS by:
