Senate Starts Child Nutrition Work

April 18, 2019

The Senate Agriculture Committee kicked off an effort to reauthorize child nutrition programs and hopes to pass a bill later this year.  At an April 10 hearing, Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) said, “There is a pathway for child nutrition programs to be reauthorized in a bipartisan manner yet this year.”

The child nutrition programs offer opportunities for students to consume eggs and other healthy foods.  Eggs are one of the supplemental foods in the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program.  As the School Breakfast Program has expanded, convenient dishes like breakfast egg sandwiches have been featured in some schools.  And with salad bars more popular in the National School Lunch Program, hard-boiled eggs have often been featured.
